04 · Why The Tracking Co

The Tracking Co is a Cape Town-based GPS vehicle tracking company, tracking since 2016.

Customers buy their hardware outright. There's no minimum subscription term. Most other South African tracking providers bundle hardware into 12-, 24- or 36-month service contracts.

Every TTC subscription includes the full platform. No feature tiers. No paywalls.

05 · Built differently

Three things most tracking companies won't do.

Install it yourself

Every device is built for self-install — the OBD Mini plugs in cold, and we'll guide you through wiring our advanced trackers. Use your own auto electrician if you prefer. Swap devices between vehicles freely. Run your tracking in-house, no service appointments.

Integrate with your software

Every subscription includes API access at no extra cost. REST endpoints, webhooks, real-time location data. Built for SaaS platforms, dealer systems and insurance integrations.

06 · Common questions

Tracking questions, answered.

How does The Tracking Co compare to the larger tracking companies?

The Tracking Co operates on a fundamentally different model. Most major South African tracking providers bundle hardware into 12-, 24- or 36-month service contracts, with cancellation fees if you leave early. The Tracking Co sells hardware outright from R499 and bills subscriptions month-to-month from R50. There's no minimum term — cancel any time without penalty. The trade-off is that the largest providers have decades of brand history and extensive stolen vehicle recovery networks. The Tracking Co is the right choice if you value transparency, no lock-in and full platform access without paywalls.

Do I need a contract?

No. The Tracking Co subscriptions are month-to-month from R50 per vehicle, with no penalties or early termination fees. Most major South African tracking providers bundle hardware into their service, which is why they require 12-, 24- or 36-month minimum terms. The Tracking Co sells hardware outright — so we don't need to lock you in to recover the cost of a device we no longer own.

Can I install the GPS tracker myself?

Yes — every Tracking Co device is built for self-installation. The OBD Mini (R499) plugs into your vehicle's OBD port in under a minute, with no tools. For hardwired trackers, we'll guide you through the install, or you can hand it to your own auto electrician — under an hour for most vehicles. Self-installation does not affect insurance approval or warranty. Most other South African tracking providers require installation through their service centre as part of the contract.

Is the hardware mine to keep?

Yes. The Tracking Co sells hardware outright — once you pay for it, the device is yours permanently. This differs from the typical South African tracking model, where hardware is bundled into a service contract: when you cancel, you usually lose access to the device or have to return it. With The Tracking Co, you can pause or cancel your subscription and keep the hardware. You can also transfer it to another vehicle when you sell your current one.

Can I integrate TTC tracking with my own software?

Yes. Every Tracking Co subscription includes API access at no extra cost. The API provides real-time location data, trip history, geofence events and device status through REST endpoints and webhooks. This is built for SaaS platforms, fleet management software, insurance integrations and dealer DMS systems. Most South African tracking providers either don't offer an API or charge enterprise rates for it.

Does TTC work across South Africa?

Yes. The Tracking Co provides GPS vehicle tracking nationwide across South Africa, including all major cities — Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and Pretoria — as well as rural areas and farms. The hardware uses standard South African cellular networks for connectivity. Coverage is the same whether you have one vehicle or fifty. The Tracking Co is based in Cape Town and has been operating since 2016.
