You hold the access
Live tracking on web and the mobile app, 24/7. Trip history, stops, distance, and speed — the full record, available whenever you want to look.
Watch your own vehicles from your phone. Live location, unlimited alerts, and full trip history — from R50 per vehicle per month, with no control room in between.
Self-monitored vehicle tracking is tracking where you watch the vehicles yourself, instead of paying a control room to watch them for you. The Tracking Co is a Cape Town-based GPS vehicle tracking company, tracking since 2016, and every subscription is self-monitored by default — the live map, the alerts, and the full history sit on your phone from R50 per vehicle per month.
It is the same platform a monitoring operator would use. Nothing is held back behind a higher tier. If you later want someone watching around the clock, stolen vehicle recovery is added per vehicle at R44 a month — but it is a separate decision, not a requirement.
Live tracking on web and the mobile app, 24/7. Trip history, stops, distance, and speed — the full record, available whenever you want to look.
Geofences, speed limits, and after-hours windows are yours to configure. Change them whenever the operation changes. No support ticket, no waiting.
Every alert type is part of the standard subscription. There is no premium alert pack and no feature tier — the R50 covers the platform in full.
Buy the device once, from R769. Move it between vehicles, keep spares on hand, or cancel a unit — the tracker stays with the business either way.
Most self-monitored fleets run on a two-minute morning routine. Open the dashboard, confirm every tracker is online and reporting, then look at anything that flagged overnight. It is oversight by exception — you are not watching a screen all day.
The dashboard shows every device and whether it is online. A unit that has stopped reporting is the first thing worth knowing, and it shows up before anyone phones you about it.
If a driver has taken chances before, open their history. The platform draws the route on the map — every stop, where it was, and how long the vehicle sat there.
Speeding and after-hours alerts land as they happen. The morning check is confirming what came in and deciding whether any of it needs a conversation.
Scheduled reports arrive on their own — distance covered, stops made, and a full travel sheet per vehicle. Nobody has to remember to pull them.
All of them. Every alert below is configured by you on the platform and included in the standard subscription — there is no alert that costs extra and none that has to be enabled by The Tracking Co.
Alerts reach you by push, email, or WhatsApp. What each one means is covered in vehicle tracker alerts explained. Step-by-step setup is in the alerts guide and the geofencing guide.
Self-monitored does not mean unsupported. You run the day-to-day; The Tracking Co runs the infrastructure underneath it and picks up the phone when you need something.
A Cape Town plumbing company came to The Tracking Co wanting fleet oversight across five vehicles. Staff take the vehicles home, so the business needed to know about after-hours use without policing anyone by hand. They were fitted with the 4G900L, the standard hardwired tracker at R769 a unit.
The office set an after-hours window, so admin staff are notified when a vehicle moves outside approved hours. Geofences went around the office, around staff homes, and around no-go areas. Overspeed alerts were set at 130 km/h, alongside power-disconnect alerts. Each admin staff member got a sub-account showing only the vehicles for the team they manage, and weekly reports now arrive automatically with distance, stops, and a full travel sheet.
All five fitted in one session, in the Cape Town city centre, in about three hours.
From first contact to a working platform — the vehicles were in one place and payment was settled.
Five vehicles at R50 each. Every alert, sub-account, and report included at that price.
One real job, not a service promise. That turnaround was possible because the vehicles were together in Cape Town and an installer was free. Timing varies by location and by how spread out a fleet is — ask for your area before you plan around a date.
You still have the live location, and that is the thing that matters most. Open the platform, generate a live location link, and share it with the South African Police Service. SAPS can follow a location they have been given, and the link keeps updating as the vehicle moves.
What a self-monitored subscription does not include is a control room watching on your behalf, or recovery agents sent to the scene. The Tracking Co does not dispatch recovery under a tracking-only subscription. If you want that layer, stolen vehicle recovery is R44 per vehicle per month and can be added to individual vehicles rather than the whole fleet — many businesses put it on the two or three that carry the most value and leave the rest self-monitored.
R50 per vehicle per month, plus a once-off tracker you own from R769. That is the whole cost of running tracking yourself. Nothing on the platform is charged per feature.
Hardware is a once-off purchase you own — the 4G900L at R769 or the FMC920 at R999. See the full pricing breakdown →
Running more than a handful of vehicles? They all sit on one account, and the same model scales — see GPS fleet tracking for how fleets manage it in-house.
Self-monitored vehicle tracking is tracking where the owner watches the vehicles directly, instead of paying a control room to watch them. You get the live map, the alerts, and the full trip history on your phone and on the web. Every The Tracking Co subscription is self-monitored by default at R50 per vehicle per month. Nothing is held back behind a monitoring tier — the platform you use is the same one a control room would use.
No. A control room is only needed when you want someone else watching around the clock and coordinating a physical recovery. For day-to-day oversight — where vehicles are, who is speeding, which van left the depot late — The Tracking Co gives the business owner or office manager direct access to the platform. Most fleets run entirely self-monitored and add stolen vehicle recovery only on the vehicles that warrant it.
You still have the live location. Open the platform, share a live location link, and give it to the South African Police Service so they can follow the vehicle. SAPS will act on a location. What you do not get without SVR is a 24/7 control room watching on your behalf or recovery agents dispatched to the scene — The Tracking Co does not dispatch recovery under a self-monitored subscription. SVR can be added at R44 per vehicle per month.
Yes. Stolen vehicle recovery is an add-on to any The Tracking Co subscription at R44 per vehicle per month, or R480 per vehicle per year. It can be added per vehicle rather than across the whole fleet, so a business can put SVR on the two vehicles that carry the most value and leave the rest self-monitored. Adding it does not change the hardware or require a new installation on a hardwired tracker.
Yes. Ask The Tracking Co to enable an admin account on your profile. From there you create as many sub-accounts as you need and control which vehicles each one sees, and whether that person can make changes or only view. A supervisor running four vans sees those four vans and nothing else. Sub-accounts are included in the standard R50 per vehicle per month subscription at no extra cost.
Not on a standard SIM. The Tracking Co fits MTN South African SIMs, and they stop connecting once a vehicle crosses the border. Roaming can be enabled on the same SIM before the vehicle travels — the hardware and the SIM stay as they are. Roaming data is billed month to month at MTN roaming rates for the country the vehicle is in, on top of the subscription. Tell The Tracking Co before the first cross-border trip.
Yes, if someone on the team is technically capable. A tracker needs a connection to the vehicle power supply, and beyond that you can hide it wherever you like in the vehicle. The Tracking Co supplies the wiring diagrams and its technicians will walk an installer through the process. Any auto electrician can also do the job. Self-installing saves the installation cost entirely, and the device is yours either way.
The hardware is yours, so it moves with the business rather than the vehicle. The Tracking Co can remove the unit from the old vehicle and fit it to the replacement, charging only the technician call-out — there is no transfer fee. If the vehicle is sold with the tracker still fitted, that unit is simply cancelled, with no cancellation fee. Your own auto electrician can do the swap instead if you prefer.
Hardware from R499. Subscriptions from R50 a month. No contracts, no setup fee, no surprise upgrades.
