01 · Why TTC

Why do fleet operators choose The Tracking Co?

Because they keep control. The Tracking Co is a Cape Town-based GPS vehicle tracking company, tracking since 2016. It sells the hardware outright and bills month-to-month from R50 per vehicle, so your team manages tracking in-house with no contract tying you to a provider's timeline.

No contracts, ever

Month-to-month or annual. Cancel anytime, no penalties, no early termination fees. Traditional providers require 24–36 month agreements — TTC does not.

You own the hardware

One purchase. Your device, permanently. Move it between vehicles when you need to — no admin, no calls to us. When you sell a vehicle, transfer the tracker to the next one.

Everything included

Every platform feature — geofencing, alerts, SARS logbooks, sub-accounts, API access. No paywalls, no upgrade tiers. Full access from day one at every subscription level.

In-house management

Your auto electricians install. Your team manages the platform. Keep spare units on hand — a new vehicle is tracked within hours of joining your fleet. No waiting on a provider's schedule.

02 · How it works

How does fleet tracking work with The Tracking Co?

Buy the trackers, have your own electrician fit them, and run everything from the platform. Four steps, and your team handles all of them — The Tracking Co only needs the vehicle details to activate each unit.

01

Buy your devices outright

Choose the 4G900L (R769) or FMC920 (R999) — or the FMC880 for outdoor plant, or the FMB140 for CAN BUS data. See the full hardware range. Running a fleet of bakkies? See bakkie tracking. Tracking trailers, plant, generators or other equipment? See asset & equipment tracking → Once-off purchase — yours permanently. No rental, no hidden device fees, no contract to sign.

02

Your team installs

Your auto electrician or mechanic wires the unit. We guide them through it on WhatsApp. Most standard vehicle installs take under 45 minutes.

04

Move devices yourself

New vehicle joins the fleet? Your team moves the tracker immediately. No calls to TTC, no waiting, no admin delay. See moving a tracker between vehicles.

03 · Self-monitored or monitored

What's the difference between self-monitored and monitored fleet tracking?

Self-monitored tracking means your own team watches the fleet on the platform and gets every alert directly — no control room in the loop. A monitored service adds 24/7 human monitoring and a physical recovery response. The Tracking Co offers both: tracking from R50 per vehicle per month, with stolen vehicle recovery as an optional R44 add-on. Read the full breakdown of self-monitored vehicle tracking, including what happens in a theft without SVR.

04 · Included in every plan

06 · The model difference

Why run fleet tracking in-house instead of through a provider?

Because nothing waits on a provider. Traditional providers control your tracking setup. Installations need to be arranged through them. Device moves require calls and wait times. The contract keeps you locked in.

With TTC, you own the hardware from day one. Your team installs using your preferred auto electrician. Move a device between vehicles immediately — no calls, no admin. Keep spare units on hand so any new vehicle is tracked within hours.

What does tracking 10 vehicles cost over 3 years?

About R25,690 with The Tracking Co — R7,690 for ten 4G900L trackers you keep, plus R18,000 in subscriptions at R50 per vehicle per month. The same ten vehicles on a typical rental contract run past R90,000.

08 · Engine cutoff

Can you cut a fleet vehicle's engine remotely?

Yes. Fit a R200 relay to any 4G900L or FMC920 and your team can immobilise that vehicle directly from the tracking app. One relay per vehicle, installed by your auto electrician alongside the tracker. No ongoing fee.

If a vehicle is stolen or hijacked, the engine can be cut remotely to bring it to a stop. This makes recovery significantly easier and reduces the distance a stolen vehicle travels. The cutoff can be triggered and released from the platform — your team has full control.

R200 once-off

No ongoing subscription cost. Pay once when the relay is installed.

App-controlled

Cut or restore the engine remotely from the tracking platform. Your team has full control.

4G900L + FMC920

Compatible with both fleet workhorse devices. Relay wired in by your auto electrician.

Engine cutoff is designed for responsible use — cut only vehicles you own or manage. If you're using SVR, 24/7 recovery operators can coordinate the cutoff on your behalf.

10 · Common questions

Fleet tracking questions, answered.

Does fleet tracking require a contract?

No. The Tracking Co does not require contracts for fleet tracking. Subscriptions are month-to-month from R50 per vehicle and can be cancelled at any time with no penalties or early termination fees. Unlike traditional tracking providers that use 24–36 month agreements to recover device rental costs, The Tracking Co sells hardware outright — so there is no need to lock customers in.

Can my team manage the tracking platform in-house?

Yes. Because clients own the hardware, your team has full control of your fleet tracking infrastructure. Your mechanics or auto electricians can install and move devices. Your operations team manages sub-accounts, geofences, alerts, and reports directly on the platform. The Tracking Co does not need to be involved for day-to-day fleet management.

How quickly can I add a new vehicle to the fleet?

If you keep spare units on hand, a new vehicle can be tracked within hours of joining your fleet. Your auto electrician installs the device, you send The Tracking Co the vehicle details, and the tracker appears on the platform within minutes. There is no waiting for a provider to arrange an installation slot.

What is included in a fleet subscription?

Every The Tracking Co subscription includes: live GPS tracking, full trip history, geofencing, speed and tamper alerts, SARS-compliant logbook records, sub-accounts, unlimited notifications, and API access. Everything is included at every subscription level — there are no paywalls or feature tiers. Driver behaviour alerts are available on the FMC920 and FMC880 when the device is configured for it.

What GPS devices do you recommend for fleets?

The Tracking Co recommends the 4G900L (R769) as the everyday fleet workhorse — it supports live tracking, SVR, and engine cutoff. For fleets requiring advanced reporting and driver behaviour data, the FMC920 (R999) is the preferred device. Both are hardwired units purchased once and owned permanently. An engine cutoff relay can be added to either for R200 once-off.

Does The Tracking Co offer an API for integration with fleet software?

Yes. API access is included in every The Tracking Co subscription at no extra cost. The API provides real-time vehicle locations, trip history, geofence events, and device status via REST endpoints and webhooks. This is designed for logistics platforms, custom fleet dashboards, ERP integrations, and dispatch software. Custom development support is available at R750/hour.

How much does fleet tracking cost per vehicle in South Africa?

With The Tracking Co, fleet tracking costs R50 per vehicle per month, or R540 per vehicle per year, plus a once-off tracker from R769 that you own outright. There is no contract, no rental and no setup fee. Ten bakkies fitted with the 4G900L come to R7,690 in hardware and R500 a month in subscriptions, with every platform feature included. Stolen vehicle recovery is an optional R44 per vehicle per month.

Can I track multiple vehicles under one account?

Yes. One The Tracking Co account holds your whole fleet on one map, with one login. Each vehicle needs its own tracker and its own R50 per month subscription, but there is no per-account fee and no limit on how many vehicles you add. Sub-accounts let a branch manager or team lead see only the vehicles you assign them, while head office keeps the full view.

How long does it take to install a fleet tracker?

A standard hardwired install of the 4G900L or FMC920 takes under 45 minutes per vehicle, done by your own auto electrician with The Tracking Co on WhatsApp if needed. Once fitted, send us the vehicle details and the tracker appears on the platform within minutes. The plug-in OBD Mini needs no install at all. Fleets that keep spare units can have a new vehicle tracked the same day it arrives.

Can I move a tracker from one fleet vehicle to another?

Yes. Because you own the hardware, The Tracking Co places no restriction on moving it. Your auto electrician removes the unit from the vehicle you are selling and fits it to the replacement, then you send us the new vehicle details and the platform is updated. There is no transfer fee and no waiting on a provider. Many fleets keep one or two spare units for exactly this reason.

Do fleet trackers keep working across the border into Zimbabwe, Botswana or Namibia?

Not on a standard SIM. The Tracking Co fits MTN South African SIMs, and they stop connecting the moment a vehicle crosses the border. Roaming can be enabled on the same SIM before the vehicle travels — there is no need to swap hardware or fit a different SIM. Roaming data is billed month to month at MTN's roaming rates for the country the vehicle is in, on top of the R50 subscription. Tell The Tracking Co which routes a vehicle runs before its first cross-border trip.

What happens if a fleet vehicle is stolen and I don't have SVR?

On a tracking-only subscription there is no control room and no recovery team: it is a self-monitored service. You see the vehicle's live location on the platform and can share it with SAPS or your own security company to assist their response. If the vehicle has an engine cutoff relay fitted, you can immobilise it from the app. Fleets that want 24/7 monitored response add SVR from The Tracking Co at R44 per vehicle per month, on any vehicle, at any time.
