Asset Tracker — Wireless Magnetic Backup

A small wireless tracker that mounts magnetically anywhere ferrous and pings its location on a schedule you choose — one ping a day for up to 3 years on its replaceable lithium battery, or more often (battery life shortens accordingly). The Tracking Co positions it as a hidden backup — a second line of defence behind a primary hardwired tracker — and as a standalone option for unpowered assets. R699 once-off + R30 a month for the cellular data, whichever schedule you pick.

What it is

The Asset Tracker is a sealed wireless tracker that mounts onto any ferrous surface with a magnet — wheel arch, chassis rail, behind a bumper, inside a panel. It has no wiring, no install signature, and no visible giveaways. It runs on a replaceable lithium battery rated for up to 3 years at one ping per day. Pings go to the TTC platform over 4G LTE on whichever schedule you choose. The Tracking Co designs it specifically as a hidden backup — something a thief is unlikely to find after disabling a primary tracker.

What it does

It sends location pings on a schedule you choose. One ping every 24 hours lasts up to 3 years on the replaceable lithium battery. Two pings a day lasts roughly 18 months. Shorter intervals are possible but the battery drains faster — and the price is the same R30 a month either way, so the trade-off is purely battery life against how often you'll swap the battery. Live tracking, geofences, and trip history remain jobs for a primary tracker (4G900L, FMC920, FMC880, or FMB140). The Asset Tracker covers two real-world jobs: a hidden recovery backup on a vehicle whose primary has been disabled, and a standalone option for unpowered assets — skips, containers, parked trailers, bins.

03 · What you get

What the Asset Tracker does, day-to-day.

Every TTC device runs on the same platform. Live tracking, geofences, alerts, and the SARS logbook are included on every plan, on every device. What changes per device is the hardware — what it physically does, and what it picks up.

  • Sealed wireless unit — no wiring, no loom, no install signature
  • Magnetic mount sits anywhere ferrous — wheel arch, chassis, panel, bumper
  • Battery life depends on ping schedule — up to 3 years at one ping per day on the replaceable lithium battery
  • 4G LTE cellular — location pings sent to the TTC platform on the schedule you choose
  • Flat R30/month data fee on every schedule — frequency does not change the price
  • Two genuine uses: hidden recovery backup, or standalone tracker for unpowered assets
  • Movable between assets in seconds — no install to redo
Best for

A vehicle that already has a primary hardwired tracker but needs a hidden second line of defence in case the primary is found and disabled — or an unpowered asset (trailer, container, skip, bin) where you only need to locate it on a schedule, not live.

04 · Installation

Magnetic mount. About 30 seconds.

  1. 01 Find a ferrous surface on the vehicle — wheel arch, chassis rail, the back of a bumper, the inside of a panel.
  2. 02 Wipe the surface dry. Press the Asset Tracker against it. The magnet does the rest.
  3. 03 Activate the device on the TTC platform — send The Tracking Co the IMEI via WhatsApp.
  4. 04 Confirm the first daily ping arrives on the platform within 24 hours. Then forget about it.

The Tracking Co recommends mounting it somewhere a thief is unlikely to look after disabling the primary tracker — not in the engine bay, not near the dash, not anywhere that screams "tracker hidden here".

05 · Compatibility & add-ons

Add-ons, features, and what's not supported.

Clear, no-spin compatibility — including what the Asset Tracker can't do. If you need something on this list that the Asset Tracker doesn't support, the comparison table at the end of all devices will point you to the right unit.

  • Pairs as backup to any primary tracker Works alongside the 4G900L, FMC920, FMC880, FMB140, or OBD Mini
  • Unpowered trailer / asset use Runs on its own internal battery — no vehicle power needed
  • Hidden install (no wiring signature) Sealed unit, no visible giveaways for a thief to spot
  • Up to 3-year battery life On one ping per day — shorter intervals reduce battery life
  • Choose your own ping schedule Flat R30/month either way — frequency only affects battery life
  • Live tracking Scheduled pings only — use a primary tracker for live position
  • Stolen-vehicle recovery (SVR) Not a primary tracker — SVR runs against the hardwired unit
  • Engine cut-off relay Wireless device — no wiring path for a relay
  • Geofences and ignition alerts Scheduled pings only — these need a live primary tracker
06 · Data subscription

R30 a month. Your ping schedule. Cancel anytime.*

The Asset Tracker runs on a R30 per month data subscription — separate from the standard R50 tracking subscription that primary devices use. The R30 covers the cellular link that delivers location pings to the TTC platform on the schedule you choose: once a day for up to 3 years on the replaceable lithium battery, twice a day for around 18 months, or more often if you'd rather (battery life shortens). The price is the same R30 either way. There is no platform tier, no setup fee, no contract. The Tracking Co designs the Asset Tracker for two real-world jobs: a hidden recovery backup alongside a primary tracker, and a standalone option for unpowered assets like trailers, containers, and skips — see asset & equipment tracking.

08 · Common questions

Asset Tracker — common questions.

How often does the Asset Tracker report its location?

You choose, and the choice trades battery life for frequency. One ping every 24 hours lasts up to 3 years on the replaceable lithium battery. Two pings a day lasts roughly 18 months. Shorter intervals are possible but drain the battery faster. The Tracking Co charges a flat R30 a month regardless of schedule — you're only trading frequency for how often you'll swap the battery. For a static asset you only need to locate occasionally, one ping a day is usually plenty.

How do I use the Asset Tracker with my primary tracker?

Two devices, two roles. The primary tracker (4G900L, FMC920, FMC880, or FMB140) handles live position, alerts, geofences, and SVR — wired into the vehicle and visible to anyone who knows where to look. The Asset Tracker is hidden separately, somewhere a thief is unlikely to find after disabling the primary. If the primary goes dark, you still get scheduled pings from the backup. Both devices appear on the same TTC account.

Where should I mount the Asset Tracker?

Anywhere ferrous, dry, and not where a thief would look after finding the primary tracker. Good spots: behind a wheel-arch liner, on the chassis rail, behind a metal panel, inside a hollow bumper. Bad spots: anywhere near the dash, engine bay, or under the seat — those are the first places a thief checks. The Tracking Co does not publish a recommended location publicly; it is something you decide and keep to yourself.

Does the battery really last 3 years?

Up to 3 years on one ping per day, which is the longest-life schedule. Two pings a day brings it down to about 18 months, and more frequent intervals shorten it further. Cold weather and weak cellular signal also shorten battery life. The lithium battery is replaceable — when the device sends a low-battery alert on the platform, you swap in a fresh cell rather than buying a new unit.

Can I use the Asset Tracker on a trailer or piece of plant?

Yes — and that is one of its strongest use cases. Trailers and plant often have no permanent power source, which rules out hardwired trackers like the 4G900L or FMC920. The Asset Tracker needs no power supply, mounts magnetically, and runs on its own battery long enough to track location for years on a daily ping. For an unpowered trailer that does not need live tracking, the Asset Tracker on its own is fine. For a trailer that does need live tracking, pair it with the FMC880 (which can wire onto an auxiliary battery).
